So I think I am going to send Christian to college next year. He is 13 and it is time for him to get a job and start pulling his own weight around here.
Kidding. I swear.
In Michigan homeschooled kids can dual enroll in college. If he enrolls in community college and gets a few credits under his belt, he can transfer to a four year school (U of M?)and not have to worry about transcripts, SAT's and all that good stuff.
There is a tiny, tiny (3 building) branch of a community college at the end of my street. Seriously, like two blocks away. I was thinking of taking German there, because I really, really want to finally master the language from hell, and I "sprechen" like crap. I figured if I am going to take a class there, maybe he could too. Maybe German with me and another one.
Also, the school at the end of the street gives homeschooled kids a 50% tuition break until they graduate from their homeschool.
I haven't talked to them yet, so I don't know what they would require him to take. I do know, however, that in Michigan the entrance exam to community colleges is at a 6th grade level. And even then, if you don't pass it, you just take remedial classes. And I do know that community college would be a good place to start. Small classes, easier classes, and teachers more willing to help.
As someone who went to Kent State I can say I don't think I would ever do that to my kids. (Any big school... not just Kent State.)
So there are my rambling thoughts on higher education for my 13 year old. Whaddaya think?
